What the Dresdner Frauenkirche is for the Oschatzer is the Aegidien church. That's how it is written. With 199 steps you can reach the top, enjoy the view and visit the historic Türmer apartment. But not in the winter. From Easter, the church is only open again. Really a pity for winter visitors like us.

The church of St. Aegidien is the symbol of the city. The two 75 m high towers greet you far out into the Oschatzer Land.

The origin of the church, which was consecrated to St. Aegidius, is probably in the 11th century (chapel / wooden church). The oldest components, enclosing walls, pillars and some other architectural elements of today's church come from an early stone church building in the 14th century. This older church was completely destroyed during the Hussite invasion in 1429. The new building took place from 1443 in the Gothic style, with two towers. In 1464 the Gothic crypt was built under the altar arch. It has the shape of an octagon and arches in a star shape over a squat central column. It was accessible from the outside, but was never used for religious services.

With the introduction of the Reformation, St. Aegidien became an Evangelical Lutheran town church after 1539.
The town fire in 1616 badly affected the church, but after six years the entire building with only one tower was consecrated in the baroque style. The second city fire in 1842 again badly destroyed the church and with it many witnesses of church history and church art.
From 1846-49 today's proud building was built in neo-Gothic style with its two towers under the direction of the Nuremberg master builder Prof. Alexander Heideloff.
Ornate stained glass adorn the interior of the church. The altar and pulpit were also designed by Heideloff.

I recommend the ascent to the tower dwelling. It is lovingly made, you have a great view and there is cake and coffee (or water or apple juice spritzer) at the top. 😀
