The Bremen town hall was built between 1405 and 1410 and in the 17th century it was given a facade in the style of the Weser Renaissance. It is one of the most beautiful town halls in Germany and, together with the Roland, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage of Humanity.

The original Old Town Hall on the market square was built between 1405 and 1412. From the market side, however, you can no longer see much of the rather simple late Gothic brick building. The Renaissance facade, which today gives the UNESCO-protected building its decorative appearance, was built between 1608 and 1614 by Lüder von Bentheim. Especially above the arcades on the market side, it is lavishly decorated with various representations from ancient mythologies, which mix with Christian symbolism, symbols from the city of Bremen and other representations in an idiosyncratic way. In the upper part of the second of the eleven arcade arches there is a depiction of the Bremen Gluckhenne, a legend that the Bremen writer Friedrich Wagenfeld put down on paper in 1844. The Bremen folk tale is said to have been passed down orally from generation to generation for centuries.
