The Saarn cemetery is a sober, drafty and treeless place that we soon leave in the direction of Saarn Monastery.
And neither of us have been here before, as we can assure ourselves.
Let us sit down for vespers in the lee of St. Mary's Assumption despite the threatening cloud mountains.
Don't visit the monastery because of the daily kilometers still to come; But we'll certainly do it again, as the outer monastery gardens have a very charming character that makes you curious.

"On the outskirts of Saarn, on the Ruhr Valley terrace above the river meadow, is the Saarn Monastery. Below the monastery, a pond has been preserved in the meadow. Two streams called Mühlbach flow through the meadow towards the pond. Remains of the former water mill, which lie between the pond and the old railway embankment are said to have stood, have not been preserved."

"The first documented mention of the mill, which is one of the monastic farm buildings, dates back to 1595. The mill was a grain mill to supply the monastery. It existed until the second half of the 19th century and finally had to give way to the new Ruhr Valley Railway ."
