The itinerary starts from the Abetone Botanical Garden, which can be reached just before Le Regine, turning to Pian di Novello and then still keeping to the right.
Park the car at the end of the paved road, pass the barrier and continue along the dirt road (trail sign 104 which we will follow almost to the lake) that runs along the Sestaione stream, with its beautiful waterfalls and inviting pools. The route, although always wide and comfortable, gradually becomes steeper and with a last pull that can be a bit tiring for children, in about 45 minutes from the start (child speed) you reach the refuge called la Shepherd's House,
a lovely stone bivouac surrounded by a cool picnic area, with tables and a source of fresh water. It goes without saying that here it is worth taking a relaxing break.

The building served as a food shelter for the partisans of the so-called 'Pippo Gang' in the Second World War.
In the summer of 1944 it was the site of a sad story as here, eight young partisans were killed during a Nazi-fascist attack and a ninth was never heard of again.
