There are only a few remains of the ruins of the Hinterlichtenstein. The Vorderlichtenstein ruins with a large information board are much larger and more interesting. There is even a swivel grill in the walk-in inner courtyard.

The ruin Lichtenstein is the ruin of a hilltop castle near Neufra in the district of Sigmaringen in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The double castle is divided into the Vorderlichtenstein, also called Bubenhofen, and the Hinterlichtenstein.

The history of Vorder- und Hinterlichtenstein is strongly linked to the history of Neufra. It was the seat of the Lords of Lichtenstein. Her residence on the today's castle ruin Lichtenstein is attested at least in the years from 1332 to 1447.

A first documentary mention Neufras as Nufiron, possession of the counts of Gammertingen, is from the year 1138 in the chronicle Bertholds of Zwiefalten. The ancestors of the Lichtensteiner could be the brothers Heinrich and Milo, who were called by a Zwiefalter chroniclers around 1140 as noble servants of Count Ulrich von Gammertingen.

The birth of the castle Vorderlichtenstein dates from 1150 to 1180.
