On the castle hill of Nice stood the castle, a citadel which was built for military purposes. It stood at the top of a hill overlooking the bay of Nice from the 11th century to the 18th century. The citadel was besieged several times, especially in 1543 and 1691, before being taken by French troops in 1705 and finally destroyed in 1706 by the order of Louis XIV.

Today the Schlossberg is used as a park. It is the most famous public garden in Nice and a "must see" for the numerous tourists who visit the city. It offers many stunning panoramas and a beautiful view from sunrise to sunset.

A climb up the hill via Rue Rosetti and Place Garibaldi is recommended. Artificial waterfalls and a wonderful green area with cacti and palm trees line the path. As they climb, visitors also pass the ruins of the old St. Réparate Cathedral, which was not used for long. As life moved more into the city, a new cathedral was built in Nice's old town.
