In 1906, on the advice of carters, forest workers and brushwood collectors, Emma and Ernst Urban built a spruce log house on their forest property in Oberfriedersdorf. The restaurant "Blockhaus zum Waldfrieden" developed over the years into a popular excursion destination for the summer months. In 1929, the son, Curt Urban and his wife Frieda, took over the regular restaurant "Urbans Gasthaus" on the Friedersdorfer Hempel and also the associated block house in the forest, where they expanded the outdoor facilities to include a children's playground and a veranda with a dance floor.
The popular summer festivals were held here every summer until 1939. In the spring of 1940 the innkeeper was drafted into military service and the blockhouse remained closed until 1947. In the course of the new trade regulations after the war, the two restaurants had to be operated separately. After a renovation in 1947, the block house was leased to Annelies and Hans Haase. From 1954 to 1955, Rudolph Menzel managed the excursion restaurant with his wife Erna.
In 1956 the Urban family began building a beer cellar and an apartment above it. During this time, the Schinkel and Sachse families ran the inn as tenants. On October 1, 1961, Curt Urban handed over the log cabin to his eldest son Herbert and his wife Erna. So it was managed by the family again. In autumn 1969, in order to gain more economic space, work began on adding a storey to the solid part of the house and building a small outbuilding.
Due to increasing car traffic, a second parking lot soon had to be created. In August 1977, as part of the asphalting of Diebstrasse, Blockhausstrasse and the two parking lots were also given an asphalt surface. This was only possible because the necessary road substructure was built by the Urban family themselves from field stones.
Even 30 years after the end of the war, there were still quotas for wines, meat products and many other things. Even beer and mineral water were only available on allocation in the summer. Nevertheless, many happy company and family celebrations were celebrated during the GDR era.
