The mountain takes its name from the three crosses, originally in wood and today in metal, placed on it. Although the road to reach it is in the Ventoso area, Monte delle Tre Croci is part of San Ruffino.

These crosses are presumed to have already existed before the 17th century. The mountain was the destination of processions of the parishioners of San Ruffino during the Easter celebrations. The inhabitants of the neighboring parishes could only join the procession with the authorization of the parish priest.
