The Ronald McDonald House in Essen was opened in 2005 after the last architectural design by the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. It is a temporary home for families with seriously ill children who are being treated in the Essen University Hospital.

The McDonald’s Children's Aid Foundation builds and operates “Ronald McDonald Houses” and “Ronald McDonald Oases” and is related to the McDonald’s fast food chain. The first chairwoman of the supervisory board was the SPD politician and former Bundestag president Annemarie Renger. Her successor was Rita Süssmuth in 1997

Worth seeing house of the Viennese artist Hundertwasser. It is not as consistently built and extensive as the Hundertwasser House in Vienna.
