Close to the Dutch border, the wooded Postel is located with its imposing abbey, which was founded in the twelfth century. It is the Premonstratensians who have cultivated the region since that time and hold hospitality in high esteem. They engage in forestry, agriculture and animal husbandry. To support themselves, they brew beer and make cheese. In the meantime, this has grown into a true, artisanal industry. One that tourists are only too happy to visit.

In 1138, Premonstratensian canons from the Floreffe Abbey in Postel founded a monastery as a dependent priory of their abbey. In 1613 Postel became independent from Floreffe and in 1618 was given the status of an abbey. The abbey was closed in 1797 and the canons were expelled as a result of the French Revolution when French troops occupied the Austrian Netherlands. The buildings were privately owned in 1797, but were returned to the order in 1847. The buildings were then restored and converted in several phases.

From 1943 until the end of the Second World War, Herman Van Breda was able to hide parts of Edmund Husserl's manuscripts in the abbey; these works, also known as the Husserl Archives, are now owned by the Catholic University of Leuven.
