This view from above of the lakes is in my opinion the most beautiful on New Zealand's North Island!
The three emerald lakes are small crater lakes at an altitude of approx. 1700m. Their color comes from the minerals of the volcanic subsoil and can change between greenish and bluish. Bathing is prohibited. The Emerald Lakes, Blue Lake and the mountain peaks are sacred to the Maori and should not be touched.
