The Reinoldikirche is not only the largest and oldest church, it is also the city center and landmark of Dortmund. Here in Dortmund, she is an important stop on the Westphalian Way of St. James. On Sundays, the tower climb is worthwhile.

Opening hours:

Church: Monday to Sunday 10am to 6pm

Tower: Sunday 10 to 12 o'clock

Besides checking out this earliest still existing documented church in Dortmund (originally from 1270, the current building is newer from 1701), make sure to climb to the top of the bell tower for unrivaled views of Dortmund downtown and the surrounding post-industrial landscape. You'll be surprised how green this former industrial region has become.

Church opens: Montag - Freitag: 14-18 Uhr , Samstag: 10-18 Uhr

Sonntag: 13-18 Uhr (11.30 Uhr// Gottesdienst)

The tower is normally open Sundays 10-12 h, but closed in March/April 2020 during organ reconstruction. Check website for updates:

The Reinoldikirche is now in the same place as its predecessor church in the 10th century - in the center of Dortmund, directly on Hellweg. What is now a shopping street has been an important European trade route since ancient times, which was particularly important for Dortmund during the medieval Hanseatic League. Since the time of the Ottonian rulers in the 10th century, the previous church was a center in the political and religious structure of the city: in the middle of the "New Village", in the area of the royal palace.

The medieval Dortmund chroniclers report of a first church as early as the 9th century. According to excavations, however, a church was not built until the 10th century, perhaps before 953, as a court day of King Otto I held in Dortmund with an Easter celebration afterwards is occupied. For this there must have been a Palatinate Church - this may have been the predecessor of the Reinoldikirche. At this point in time or later, it could already have been a collegiate church and have had parish rights.
