The pilgrimage church of Maria Zell bei Hechingen (district Boll) in the Zollernalbkreis is located directly on the steep slope of the Swabian Alb below the Zeller Horn with a view of Hohenzollern Castle and goes back to the settlement of Zell, which was abandoned in the 15th century. This settlement probably evolved from a monk cell of the monastery of St. Gallen. In 789 this monastery had been given a farm estate "on the slope" of a high mountain near Hechingen. From the cell became a settlement Zell with a local nobility of the lords of cell, a castle, the former castle cell, and a parish church of the St. Gallus.

The lords of Zell were the ancestors of the famous noble family of those von Stauffenberg. The land around the Zollerberg was property of the Lords of Zell long before the Zollerngrafen took possession of the mountain. It is believed that Zell was the original name of Stauffenberger. Since the Stauffenberger held the hereditary donation office with the counts of Zollern, Schenk became part of their surname.

A legend, which is shown in the library of the castle Hohenzollern, tells that the church Mariazell was moved to Boll. However, angels would have returned the church to its original place overnight.

In 1633, during the Thirty Years War, when Hohenzollern Castle was besieged, the Mariazeller chapel burned down.

Another legend tells that miraculous image of St. Mary was miraculously saved. A soldier who threw the picture into the flames died the same day. Based on these legends, the importance as a place of pilgrimage and pilgrimage.
