At the beginning of the 15th century, the city of Kleve sought direct access to the Rhine. For this purpose, she expanded the receiving water Spoygraben to a 4 km long shipping channel. In 1658 the now dilapidated canal was restored and made accessible to Brienen with a lock. In 1809 the canal and the lock were destroyed by a powerful flood with ice.
