    Between Bamberg, Nuremberg and Neustadt a.d. Aisch extends one of the largest pond landscapes in Germany - the Aischgrund.

    Since the Middle Ages, ponds for fish farming have been created here in Middle Franconia on water-retaining clay layers. The change of sand and clay layers as well as the favorable climatic situation in the lee of the Steigerwald provided ideal conditions for the emergence of one of the largest pond landscapes in Central Europe.

    During the following centuries, many animal and plant species of natural waters inhabited these man-made habitats.

    The catchment area of the Aischgrunde today has about 4,000 ponds with a total area of about 3,500 hectares. The ponds are managed by about 1,200 pond farmers mainly in the peasantry sideline.
