Nestled in the geothermal heart of Iceland, Reykjadalur Valley - the "Steam Valley" - welcomes visitors with a magnificent display of mist, steaming springs and the enchanted atmosphere of the north. Located not far from Reykjavík and in close proximity to the picturesque town of Hveragerði, the valley offers a unique panorama that combines the raw power and beauty of Iceland.
A walk through Reykjadalur reveals all the wonders of this unique landscape. Lush green plains where sheep leisurely graze are interspersed with babbling waterfalls and geothermal springs hissing and bubbling everywhere. The echoes of Hengill's last volcanic eruption 2,000 years ago still reverberate in the form of bubbling mud pots and the steady warmth that permeates the valley.
The absolute highlight of the valley, however, is the Reykjadalsá River. Here, the hot water from the depths of Hengill Mountain mixes with the cooler water of the Klambragil Gorge, creating an open-air thermal bath. The river's vibrant light blue, caused by volcanic minerals, shines in contrast to the moss-covered rocks and red and black volcanic hills.
While a swim in these warming waters seems tempting - and the higher parts of the river are particularly warm - visitors should always be mindful of their safety. Changing facilities are limited and conditions can be challenging, particularly in winter due to snow and ice.
Nevertheless, the idea of lying here in the warm water, putting your head back and watching the play of colors of the northern lights in the sky makes every hiker's heart beat faster. Although camping is prohibited directly in the valley, there are campsites in the surrounding area that perfectly round off the adventure.
