The stone gate was built in Gothic style in 1270 and was probably the same size as the Kröpeliner Tor.

As a failure gate to the south, however, he was of greater importance. In the Middle Ages, the stone gate was the main entrance of the city.

Through this gate, the princes came quickly on the specially paved road (stone road) to get to the town hall and St. Mary's Church.

In 1566, the stone gate, parts of the city wall and the Lagebuschturmes on the orders of Duke Johann Albrecht I was torn down because Rostock denied the formal oath of allegiance.

The Rostocker let the successor building 1575 to 1577 in the style of the Dutch Renaissance build. The heavy war devastation made from 1950 to 1954 again a comprehensive restoration by the master builder Grützmacher necessary.

The field side of the stone gate is kept very simple. In addition to a small sandstone board with the city and state coat of arms are still segmental loopholes can be seen, hook-shaped stones suggest the portcullis.

On the city side of the gate, lions carry the three coats of arms that the city has used on its long journey of history: the griffin (seal of approval), the bull's head (large city seal) and the three-color shield with the griffin in the upper field (the Hanseatic coat of arms) ,
