The Château de Tarascon is a magnificent example of a Provençal fortified castle. It impresses with its position on the banks of the Rhône. The small town of Tarascon, excellently shaded by its plane trees, is known for its monster of the waters of the Rhône which is represented many times in the town in the form of statues. In the legend, it is said that the banks at the foot of the castle have always sheltered the sleep of the Tarasque. Every year, the Tarasque festival takes place where the effigies of the monster parade with the inhabitants in disguise. This gives the opportunity to attend a joyful carnival. The Château de Tarascon - René d'Anjou Arts Center - is located on the banks of the Rhône in the Bouches-du-Rhône department in France. By its remarkable state of conservation, this exceptional monument is one of the most beautiful medieval castles of France and Europe built between 1400 and 1435, on the architectural model of the Bastille, by the Dukes of Anjou, hosts of the castles of 'Angers and de Saumur. King René made only small modifications from 1447 to 1449 under the leadership of Jean de Serocourt and Regnault de Serocourt, captain and lieutenant of Tarascon, in order to make it more habitable and had his bust and that of Queen Jeanne placed of Laval in a niche in the main courtyard. At the end of his reign, King René did some work from 1476 to 1479, such as replacing the drawbridge with a fixed bridge. After 1481 the castle was only used occasionally by the king's agents. Tarascon Castle is located directly on the Rhône and was partly used as a prison. The castle can be visited today and concerts are often held here. If you cycle past it, the massive structure with its towers is very impressive.
