Himmler's bunker, 21.4 m long, 19.3 m wide and 8.4 m high, had two 80 cm wide entrances that were previously closed with steel doors. Despite the impressive external dimensions, the interior was cramped due to the bunker's meter-thick walls and ceiling. In 1943, when the German troops on the Eastern Front withdrew, Himmler ordered the scorched earth policy from the Hochwald.

The former field command post Hochwald is about 20 km as the crow flies from the former Hitler bunker Wolfsschanze. Access to the main bunker space can be reached via several routes or is also signposted. On the main square with the Himmler bunker, quite a few beaten paths can already be seen; but would advise you to be very careful when exploring! There is also a beautiful forest and several lakes attached. The bunker ruins are also located on the well-known E11 hiking trail ☝️👋
