The Pisa Cathedral is one of the most famous buildings in Tuscany. Its church tower, the Campanile, which is the symbol of the city as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, made it a visitor attraction. Today the cathedral functions as the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Pisa. Together with the Baptistery and the Camposanto, the cathedral and tower form a complex that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.

Founded in 1064 thanks to the loot that the Pisans brought back from the sacking of Palermo and from the anti-Saracen exploits of Reggio, Sardinia and Bona, the Cathedral of Santa Maria testifies to the prestige achieved by the Maritime Republic of Pisa at its apogee. This is demonstrated by the fact that the church was built outside the city walls, symbolizing a power that feared no threats.
The Cathedral was built in two phases, respectively linked to the Buscheto architects, author of the original plan with a basilica body with five naves, a transept with three naves and a dome on the cross; and Rainaldo who designed the extension of the building and created the façade which features contrasting black and white colours, and an insistent use of reused materials from Roman monuments, to reiterate the greatness of Pisa.

The cathedral is beautiful on the outside, full of interesting and curious features. Beautiful inside too.

Together with the tower, the baptistery, the cemetery and the Santa Chiara hospital it creates one of the most famous and evocative ecclesiastical museum complexes in the world.
