Worth seeing, medieval old town center around the market square and the historic town hall. Listed ensemble. At the Löwen inn, the alchemist and magician Dr. Faust died, according to the Zimmerian Chronicle, because one of the supreme devils, Mephistophiles, broke his neck here. The corresponding quote from the chronicle can be read on the facade of the lion. Today it is assumed that the lord of the castle Anton von Staufen employed him as a goldsmith and that he died in a chemical explosion.

In the "Kornhaus" you are in a historic building, which was probably built in 1410. Examinations of the basement bars showed that oak trees from the year 1405 were used for the house construction. In 1560 this building burned down and was rebuilt in 1568, as the inscription above the front door shows. The house was, as the name "Kornhaus" suggests, between 1569 and about 1790 used as a store of memory of the city. In the middle of the building was a shaft over four floors, in which loads were transported to the upper floors with a wooden spindle. This spindle hangs today in its original state in our staircase to the 1st floor. From about 1800, the "Kornhaus" was converted into a fire station. The upper floors were used as apartments and served as a shelter for Jewish citizens before and during the Second World War. After the war years, the "Kornhaus" business people were available as alternative camps. On the ground floor, in addition to fruit and vegetables, even clothing was sold. It was not until 1976 that the city, as the owner of the "Kornhaus", leased the building to a beer publisher who installed the first counter south of Freiburg (until then, only the regulars' table was known) and thus used "Kornhaus" as a restaurant.

Great old Staufen ... Faust is said to have died in 1539 in room number 5 in the Gasthaus zum Löwen (on the market square) in an explosion, probably in an alchemical experiment. This is reported by an inscription on the facade of the inn:
