In 1802, Schiller and his family moved into a house on the Esplanade that was built in 1777. He had it remodeled and after his death in 1805, his wife lived there until 1826. In 1847, the city of Weimar acquired the building, opened the first poet's memorial in Germany and in 1988 combined it with a new museum building, which now shows temporary exhibitions.

Friedrich Schiller spent the last three years of his life and work in the house on the Esplanade. The great dramas “The Bride of Messina” and “William Tell” were written here before the poet died in his study in 1805. The original desk and Schiller’s bed can still be seen there today.
