"The gasometer in Herne would actually have to be called 'Hibernia pane glass container.' It is one of the few of its kind in the Gewerbepark area and is a Grade II listed Klönne gas storage tank built in 1927 and operated from 1960 as a nitrogen gas tank After 15 months, the restoration work on the gasometer ended in December 2006. A stair tower with 200 steps has to be climbed to get to the top of the gasometer, whose roof looks futuristic.
In 2006, extensive renovation work was carried out on the gasometer by architect Frank Günther, who specializes in monument protection. The main focus of the renovation was the disposal of contaminated sites and the restoration of the exterior true to the original.
