The ride down to San Juan Bautista is horrendous. The road has been patched year after year, and while this was done to fill potholes, the whole road is a disaster with bumps galore. This is even most shocking than on the other side of the hill San Juan Grade is a delightful experience

The condition of the road on the San Juan Grade going into San Juan Bautista (or descending from the Monterey County side) is very bad. Lots of potholes, patches, and uneven stretches of pavement.

Riding down to San Juan Bautista from the top of San Juan Grade is a horrendous experience. The road has patches over patches. It is probably better than potholes, by your equipment and you will suffer through a couple of miles.
