"One of the oldest buildings in Stralsund with a historically grown juxtaposition and interweaving of different architectural epochs, the individual phases of the dominant Gothic, Baroque and Classicism.
In 1254, the Franciscan order was allowed to found the monastery of St. John in the north of the old town. It is a large building complex grouped around two courtyards from the 13th to the 14th century. From the monastery church, originally a three-aisled brick hall church, only remains are left today.
A major fire destroyed in 1624, the 77 -meter-long Gothic hall church, which was then not rebuilt. Instead, around the middle of the 17th century, a sort of walkway was laid in the perimeter walls, and the choir was preserved as a church. After the Reformation, the city used the monastery as a poorhouse. Both components sank by the American bombardment in 1944 to rubble and ashes. The careful restoration of the monastery from 1963 to 1986 and the endeavor to restore the building as much as possible in its original architecture and old beauty, created here in the Schillstraße a popular residence for Stralsunder and visitors. The Räucherboden on the upper floor represents a cultural historical rarity. A must when visiting Stralsund is a visit to the monastery complex. While only the ruins of the actual monastery remain, it is the small houses within the monastery walls that are beautiful to look at.

The ruins of the St. Johannis monastery are definitely worth seeing. The courtyard is not always accessible, but you can see through the gate. Unfortunately, the beautiful willow tree that stood in the courtyard was felled in the winter of 22/23. It remains to be seen whether a new tree will be planted in its place. It would be desirable, because the willow gave the monastery courtyard a picturesque appearance.

The St. Johannis Monastery is a former Franciscan monastery that was founded in 1254. The smokehouse, the Baroque library, the chapter house, the cloister and the rose garden are worth seeing. In the courtyard of the church ruins there is a replica of the Pietà by Ernst Barlach.
