The St. Mary's Church in Stralsund is a three-nave church with transept, western pseudo-transept, ambulatory and chapel-wreath. The basilica at the New Market was first mentioned in 1298. It is the largest parish church in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund. The church is considered a masterpiece of late Gothic in Central Europe. It was from 1549 to the destruction of its then, according to unsecured tradition 151 meters high Gothic peak by lightning 1647 allegedly the world's tallest structure.

The ascent to the tower costs 4 euros and is a bit adventurous in the last third over steep wooden stairs. You climb out onto the platform through a hatch and are greeted by a roaring wind at the top.
Everything well secured, but maybe not the right place with small children. But then the view is awesome.

Climbing the tower now costs €5. You should be aware that there are 366 steps or stairs/ladders, so 100 meters in altitude. Nothing for those with a fear of heights or small children. We thought it was great, the bell level, the whole wooden construction and the 360 degree view from the top of the tower are breathtaking. It runs according to the one-way street system. Up in the inner tower, down in the outer tower. Backpacks can be left with the cashier as the stairs are quite narrow

St. Mary's Church was one the tallest building in the world. Until the day the tower collapsed. It was rebuilt 50 meters smaller and is no longer the tallest church tower in the world (it is in Ulm), but with its viewing platform it offers a unique view of Stralsund, Rügen, the Strelasund and the surrounding area. To get up, you need a head for heights, because there are some very steep stairs. The ascent costs 5 euros, but it is definitely worth it! A special feature is that the ascent and descent run over different stairs. As a result, there is no oncoming traffic and you can concentrate fully on the steps. When you get back down, the gate to the outside is outside the church, so it's worth looking at the church first and then daring to climb up.
