This is where the Alte Süderelbe "ends". There are some benches here to rest. Unfortunately no restaurant. It is a nature reserve, just like the adjacent Westerweiden.

As can be seen on old maps, the Alte Süderelbe was originally the main shipping route to the port of Hamburg. Ships and cutters used this route until the last century to get to the Harburg harbor. That only changed in 1962 when Finkenwerder became mainland after the storm surge. The connection between Alter Süderelbe and Elbe was cut. Only at the stork's nest was a rivet built, with the scoop of which the water level in the Alte Süderelbe can be regulated. The tidal waters with their valuable freshwater wadding became a still water that no longer knows any tides.

Among other things, due to the missing tide, the groundwater level around the Alte Süderelbe has dropped by a little more than half a meter. The water itself is increasingly slick because sediments get into the old arm when the water level needs to be raised, but are no longer transported away due to the lack of flow. In many areas the water is about 30 to 50 cm flat, and the former fairway alone can still be as deep as two meters.

Part of the Alte Süderelbe, which meanders through the grounds like an “S”, is a 100 hectare nature reserve (NSG Alte Süderelbe), to which the Westerweiden nature reserve is connected inland.
Both the Alte Süderelbe and the Westerweiden are habitats of rare plant and animal species and resting and food areas for numerous bird species. The Alte Süderelbe serves as a water reservoir for the frost protection irrigation of the Finkenwerder orchards and the Altes Land and is the receiving water for a catchment area of around 90 square kilometers.
