The landmark of Bad Frankenhausen was structurally completed in 1975. The residents immediately took it into their hearts and affectionately named it the “elephant toilet”.

After stretching the approximately 1.1 t canvas, a Soviet team of specialists gave the canvas a primer using an old Russian secret recipe.

Tübke now began to paint the interior. It took him around 11 years (1976 - 1987). The picture is quite large at 1722 m² and has no beginning or end or left or right.

The Panorama Museum
Bad Frankenhausen - it is difficult to write the right lines for it. We were impressed by Tübke's complete artistic oeuvre. We definitely recommend the audio guide so that you can even begin to understand and understand the dimensions of the work.

“On the Schlachtberg near Bad Frankenhausen there is a widely visible rotunda that houses the largest commissioned work in the history of the fine arts of the former GDR. On the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the peasant uprising in 1973/74, the idea arose to erect a memorial at the site of its bloody suppression. On May 15, 1525 one of the decisive battles of the
German Peasant War. More than
8,000 insurgents have gathered to fight for justice and freedom, advised and led by Thomas Müntzer (around 1489-1525), who called for war against the lords with powerful language. The rebels are slaughtered by the mercenaries of the princes and Thomas Müntzer is taken prisoner. He is first tortured in the fortress Heldrungen and executed on May 27th in Mühlhausen. The Panorama Museum is an impressive work of art; here you are transported to another world. The huge circular painting and the realistic depiction of the scenes create an immersive experience that makes you feel like you are right in the middle of the action. The information on the history and background of the events depicted is well presented and provides a deeper understanding. A visit to the Panorama Museum is a cultural enrichment and an unforgettable experience for all of our club friends. We were guided through the history of the painting with an audio guide.

You can already see the museum from below, parking spaces above are available but subject to a charge. The spectacular thing about this museum is the 360-degree picture by Werner Tübke, which is shown in the round building. An art exhibition can usually be seen at the same time.

High above Bad Frankenhausen is a cylindrical structure 14 meters high and 123 meters in circumference, which houses the panorama picture »Early Civil Revolution in Germany«, executed from 1983-87 in oil on canvas by Werner Tübke. An absolutely remarkable work of art, which with over 3,000 individual figures is one of the largest and most figurative paintings in modern art history.

The Panorama Museum in Bad Frankenhausen is home to a gigantic picture (about 14 x 123 m), which the painter Werner Tübke has made over 10 years. It bears the title "Early bourgeois revolution in Germany" and is absolutely worth seeing even for art connoisseurs. If you look closely, you can find both Martin Luther and Albrecht Dürer in the fray.
The normal entrance fee for adults is 7, - EUR (as of April 2018). You are not allowed to take photographs in the hall. Another tip: If you have hiked in the summer before and are sweaty, you should take a jacket with you. The hall is air-conditioned and correspondingly cool.

Museums are always worth it. This one too. A huge panorama and the choice between the short audio guide (20 minutes) and the slightly longer one (70 minutes)... but there are also stools ;)
