St. Lorenz Basilica (Catholic)
The foundation stone for the church building was laid in 1652 and the church and monastery complex were in use from 1670. The monastery received the baroque splendor that can still be admired today in the state rooms of the residence in the 18th century. In 1802, Bavarian troops occupied the princely monastery and the imperial city of Kempten, after which the monastery was dissolved and the St. Lorenz Basilica has been exclusively a parish church since then.

The first large church building in southern Germany after the Thirty Years' War (construction began in 1652, master builders Michael Beer and Johann Serro) still impresses today with its magnificent double-tower façade (tower roofs 1900) and the mighty dome above the choir. Inside the St. Lorenz Basilica, the rich furnishings and the altars as well as the carved choir stalls with rare scagliola panels are fascinating.

The Catholic parish church and basilica of St. Lorenz is the former Benedictine monastery church of the abolished princely monastery of Kempten. It belongs to the parish of the same name in Kempten in the diocese of Augsburg. The church is dedicated to St. Lawrence of Rome, with secondary patronages being the Assumption of Mary and the patron saints of the city, Gordianus and Epimachus. The people of Kempten mostly call the church St. Lorenz Basilica, while in the style of the church the title is basilica.
During the Thirty Years' War, the then 29-year-old abbot Roman Giel von Gielsberg began preparations for the construction of the church. The church became one of the first large church buildings in Germany after the Thirty Years' War.
A special feature of the church was its division into a collegiate church and a parish church. The choir under the dome was reserved for the convent, and the nave, separated from it by a choir grille, was intended as a parish church for the people. The building project, designed to create an identity, is a Carolingian allusion to the center of Aachen Cathedral, the Palatine Chapel of Charlemagne. In 1969, Pope Paul VI awarded the Kempten parish church the honorary title of Basilica Minor.
The St. Lorenz Church is located on a free, largely natural elevation on the left Iller high terrace, surrounded to the north and west by Stiftsplatz, and to the south by Hildegardplatz.
