Only separated from the market square by a row of houses, the town church "St. Mary's" rises with its western tower, which is rare in Thuringia. The two towers with stone pyramids, pinnacles and finials as well as the beautifully coupled windows and buttresses face the setting sun. In the medieval imagination, this side was considered the realm of darkness with creatures that shunned the light and was therefore particularly in need of protection. Construction began in the first half of the 12th century. The church building was built using exposed stone. The influence of various eras is clearly visible. Starting in the Romanesque period, the building gradually transitions into the Gothic architectural style. The three lower floors of the towers are decorated with round-arch friezes.
