Briançon is a French commune located in the Hautes-Alpes department (of which it is the sub-prefecture) in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, and historically attached to Dauphiné.

It is the center town of a small agglomeration of six municipalities, the urban unit of Briançon. The territory of which Briançon is the main town is called Briançonnais; it covers the north of the Hautes-Alpes department. Briançon is considered the highest city in France (1,326 meters).

Its inhabitants, numbering 12,370 in 2015, are called the “Briançonnais”.

Its Vauban fortifications (the city wall, the forts of Salettes, des Têtes, du Randouillet, the Y communication structure and the Asfeld bridge) have been included on the UNESCO world heritage list since the July 7, 2008 alongside the eleven other sites in the network of major Vauban sites.

Nice smaller city with clearly alpine touch to the architechture. The fortifications are probably the highlight to see here.
