The Freyming-Merlebach quarry is also called Barrois quarry. This quarry is located in Moselle in the Warnt forest.

The quarry is located in 4 Moselle municipalities: l’Hôpital, Saint-Avold, Freyming-Merlebach and runs along the Franco-German border with Sarre (Land).

The Barrois quarry is the most important quarry in the Lorraine Coal Basin.

From 1880 to 1970, sandstone from the site was used to fill certain galleries in the coal mines of the coal basin. The sand from the sandstone, mixed with water, was neither too solid nor too liquid and could therefore perfectly fill the places where the galleries were dug vertically. "...

..."At the Barrois Quarry in Freyming-Merlebach, cliffs variegated with ocher, sometimes pink or yellow, transport us into an American canyon landscape. Its 80m high belvedere reveals the ponds which have long since replaced the machines. Indeed, the sandstone was crushed into sand for the backfill of the mining extraction sites. Shaped by Man, claimed by Mother Nature, the quarry has a new face: it is as much a refuge for the brown pelobate, amphibians, rare birds that nest in the cliffs, a playground for mammals and fish. Wild flowers bloom like drops of color in the middle of the vast emerald green expanses. Pedestrians and cyclists are welcome for different trails promenade with numerous access points and parking lots. Access prohibited to any motor vehicle."
