The Devil's Bridge just outside Lüneburg

The Devil's Bridge was built in 1893/94, making it the oldest of the 58 bridges in Lüneburg. At that time it was part of a beautification initiative by Royal Chief Forester Hermann Busse. As part of this, the entire Bockelsberg district was renatured and developed.

Just a place to linger. For several years I have crossed this bridge several times. It is located in the middle of the Lüneburg Ilmenau floodplain and is an ideal crossing place if you want to change sides.

A new information sign about the history of the Devil's Bridge has been put up at the "Devil's Bridge". It was built in 1893/94 and was popularly known as the “Black Bridge” for a long time; the bridge was originally painted black. The “Lüneburg Beautification Association of 1887” was the initiative of the Royal Chief Forester Hermann Busse. Here in retirement in Lüneburg he had the idea of renaturing the Bockelsberg. The Bockelsberg was a sand pit with scattered pine trees. Fish ponds were created, reforested and the Devil's Bridge was built. The current image of the west side of the Ilmenau around the Bockelsberg is thanks to Hermann Busse and the association he founded. There is also a legend about the creation of the Bockelsberg.
