The castle was first mentioned as a moated castle in 1322. It was a so-called feudal castle, which the Counts of Castell gave to various families as fiefs from this time until 1555. The castle has been the residence of the counts (since 1901 princes) of Castell-Rüdenhausen since 1555 and is unfortunately not open to the public; nevertheless very worth seeing.
