A densely wooded hill rises above the villages of Holzhausen and Lützeln: The Great Stone. It is the relic of a long-extinct volcano, the lava of which solidified into angular basalt columns. Wind and weather peeled off the softer types of rock, leaving only the very weather-resistant basalt. Frost caused the pillars to be blown up and poured over the hilltop. In this way, the rubble dump, which is still visible today, was created.

In the immediate vicinity of the basalt blocks, a deciduous forest made up of sycamore maple, ash and common linden as well as Norway maple, which is very rare in North Rhine-Westphalia, thrives. Even individual mountain elms can still be found here. The rubble forest shows its most beautiful side, especially before the leaves begin to emerge, when spring bloomers such as bush and yellow anemones, hollow larkspur or springtime flowers bloom. The forests around the Großer Stein are designated as a natural forest cell and wilderness area. Forest use is no longer allowed here.

The old giant trees represent a paradise for woodpeckers. All six species of woodpecker native to North Rhine-Westphalia, from the sparrow-sized small woodpecker to the crow-sized black woodpecker, build their caves here, which after breeding also serve as shelter for numerous other animal species such as owls, stock pigeons and wood bats.

You rarely see something like that. The legend goes that the evil giant Wackebold lived on the hill. By constantly throwing basalt boulders, he terrorized the villages of the Hickengrund below in particular. Many of these stones still lie in the Wetterbach today. But then Wackebold made a mistake: one of his projectiles killed one of Hans Hick's sons. He and his other sons swore revenge. When the giant's snoring could be heard in the valley one night, the "Hicken" crept up. They threw basalt boulders into Wackebold's throat, which suffocated him. They then piled stones on him until he could no longer be seen: the big stone.
