The 1955 bridge caused considerable traffic congestion, a problem largely resolved since 2009 by the construction of a second parallel bridge. However, the current bridge complex remains a busy traffic intersection, and it largely defines the skyline of the Scheldt municipality of Temse.

Deme and the Flemish Region are testing a microplastics catcher at this location on the bridge over the Scheldt against Temse. If this experiment turns out favorably, it can be scaled up and possibly applied to other major European rivers. Belgium and possibly Europe will then be the first to state that their rivers do not discharge microplastics into the oceans!
