Originally a simple wooden church dating from 1915, standing exactly on the Adriatic/Black Sea watershed, the present Nassfeld Chapel was built in 1916 by the Salzburg Volunteer Riflemen under General von Krasel.
The border between Austria and Italy – according to the Treaty of St. Germain – would have run directly through the chapel. Italy would have had to bear half of the maintenance costs. Since Italy believed it had enough churches to maintain anyway, the Nassfeld Chapel was awarded entirely to Austria.
