The Henneburg, which is preserved today as a ruin, was built as "Burg Prozelten" by the Schenken von Clingenburg. The mighty keep (12th century) is the oldest part, the eastern palace dates from the middle of the 13th century.
Together with the town and the surrounding area, it was sold to the Counts of Hanau-Wertheim in 1275. Later it came to the Teutonic Order and in 1483 to the Archbishopric of Mainz. The castle was expanded into a fortress by the Teutonic Order, which had the western palace, the small keep, the ring wall with its towers and the underground battlements built in the 14th and 15th centuries. It was given its current name, Henneburg, by one of its commanders.
The Henneburg is now considered one of the most beautiful castle ruins in Germany. We owe it to King Ludwig I of Bavaria that the complex is relatively well preserved today. He had security work carried out on the castle as early as the 19th century.
The entrance to Henneburg Castle is located directly in Stadtprozelten. There are several parking spaces at the castle itself. You should allow yourself some time for a visit, as there is a lot to discover. Two towers can be climbed and offer brilliant views of the surrounding area.

Opposite the small ferry is the Hock campsite. When we were here today, we didn't see anyone. We didn't find a reception either. But the toilets are open. And the area behind the barrier has been freshly mown. If you like, you can camp here cheaply. The official prices are just as old-fashioned as this campsite.
