Stickhausen Castle was built in the 15th century to ward off enemy attacks from Oldenburg. Today only the fortified tower, in which there is a local museum, is preserved. Here you can marvel at, among other things, an over one hundred year old collection of over 180 native bird species. In June there is an East Frisian garden market once a year in the Burggarten.

Located on the Jümme, you can see it coming from the west from a distance. Recently again in the possession of the public authorities and restored by them, it is a real highlight in the region that is worth visiting. However, be careful when walking around the ramparts! Numerous crows fend off hundreds of unwanted guests with their excrement from all - I say - pipes. Seen in this light, there is still sharp shooting in the castle today.
Directly around the fortress, however, you are protected from the black-feathered artillery.

Stickhausen Castle has guarded the south-eastern entrance to East Friesland since the mid-15th century. For more than two centuries it was a military fortress and protected East Friesland from enemy incursions from the east and south. In the 18th century it lost its military importance, but remained the seat of the administration of the old office of Stickhausen and the district court until 1885. Then in private hands for more than 120 years, it has belonged to the joint municipality of Jümme since 2019. The Stickhausen Castle Association has been setting up a museum in the castle tower since 2020. Its development is financed by membership fees and donations.

The fortifications on the Jümme were built in 1440 by the Hanseatic city of Hamburg to protect its trade routes leading west. In 1498, the 50-foot-high defensive tower was built, which measures 33 feet in diameter and still stands today.

HISTORY

The castle experienced its heyday in the 17th century. It included commander's and officer's apartments, barracks for 600 soldiers, barns, stables, a smithy and a school.

Only a hundred years later the end of the fortress came. The new owner, King Frederick II of Prussia, had the fortress demolished except for the tower and main building.

Since 2019, Stickhausen Castle has belonged to the Jümme collective municipality. The 3.2 hectare castle grounds are open to the public and are currently being lovingly restored and restored by the castle association.
