From 1869 to 1872, St. John's Church was built on the highest square in the city as a successor to the dilapidated previous church. It is a neo-Gothic church - and to this day the interior of the church has been largely preserved as it was when it was built. The roof of our church was recently renovated - the next big project is the organ. It is an instrument by the well-known organ builder Runge from Hagenow - as the organ has unfortunately not been well looked after in recent decades, a lot of work needs to be done. Since 1195 a church has been occupied in Dömitz. The Johanneskirche is already the fourth church building after the predecessor churches had to be demolished because of dilapidation or after a city fire. The current town church was built between 1869 and 1872 according to plans by the Schwerin architect Oppermann on the site of the previous church, the highest elevation in the city. The church was consecrated on October 20, 1872 in the presence of her patron Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II.

The neo-Gothic brick hall church is 39 meters long and has a cruciform tent roof. The pre-built, with four turrets flanked church tower is 50 meters high. The tower clock from 1873 was repeatedly repaired makeshift until it could be restored in 1988 with the donation of a former parishioner.
