The Porta Borsari dates from the 1st century BC and marked the south-west entrance to the city. Originally called "Porta Iovia" due to its proximity to the Temple of Jupiter, it received its current name in the Middle Ages. Customs officers (=bursarii) were stationed here and taxed the goods they carried. Similar to the Porta Leoni, the Porta Borsari was designed as a small fortress with watchtowers surrounding a courtyard. Today you can only see the out-of-town Torrereste.
