Pöchlarn is a municipality with 3944 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2021) in the Melk district in Lower Austria (Austria).

Pöchlarn is located in the Mostviertel, on the right (southern) bank of the Danube, directly at the mouth of the Erlauf, in the Nibelungengau, and is also known as the Nibelungenstadt. The area of the municipality covers 17.92 km², 16.47% of the area is forested.

The region was settled as early as 4000 BC. The people acted inter alia. with the serpentine mined in Klein-Pöchlarn. At the time of the Romans, the Noric Limes, the strictly guarded border with the Teutons, ran here. The area of today's city center was then on a gravel island between the main stream of the Danube and the Erlauf. There was probably also an important Danube crossing at this point. Under the Flavians, the auxiliary troop fort Arelape was built on the island, where later a cavalry troop and part of the Roman Danube fleet were stationed. The Romans also built a port.
