The piazza is the interior of a Roman amphitheater. The walls are now used for shops and restaurants. On the outside you can still see original parts of the amphitheater.
A beautiful place to sit, eat and drink.

The square is a large elliptical space, bordered by an uninterrupted row of medieval houses, with the exception of four arched doors at the four cardinal points.
As you can see from its shape, the buildings were raised exactly following a Roman amphitheater of the 1st century A.D., whose remains lie in the foundations or in the walls of the houses. The amphitheater, which was originally thought to contain around 10,000 spectators, was later transformed into a quarry for building materials, storage for salt, powder magazine and even prison.
Since it is a space open to the public, there are no timetables or entrance fees.

One of the pearls of Tuscany.
Not as crowded as Florence or Siena.

Due to the shops and bars that are now available, you can only guess from the shape of the square that the amphitheater used to stand here.

The Piazza dell'Anfiteatro is located in the city center within the 17th-century city walls, adjacent to the shopping street Via Fillungo and not far from the Romanesque church of San Frediano.

The open space, measuring just over 3,000 square meters, covers the area of an ancient Roman arena. It is surrounded by houses of varying heights, painted in light natural and yellow tones and featuring green shutters typical of the region. The evenly spaced round arches are evidence of the former public area, the cavea. Thus, the ensemble still reflects the characteristic elliptical shape of a Roman amphitheater. The square is enclosed on all sides and is accessible only through the four largest round arches. These are located at the ends of the approximately 75-meter-long longitudinal axis and the approximately 50-meter-long transverse axis. The entrance arch on the east side, the only ancient Roman one, is wider and lower than the other three. Originally it must have been considerably higher, when the level of the amphitheater was still about 3 meters below today's level.[1] A cross engraved in the central floor slab marks the axes and refers to the four entrance gates.

Lucca was built according to a medieval plan and much of the architecture bears witness to the different historical periods that it has gone through and made this city what it is today.

From one highlight to the next we experience the most interesting highlights with, among others, the Duomo di San Martino, of which the Romanesque façade is the eye-catcher, and the Roman amphitheatre on the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro. “Panem et circenses” or "bread and games" can still be taken literally here today.
In playful ways, waiters try to win the guests for their establishment. Street artists compete with each other to get a piece in 'their' pocket.
A beautiful spectacle to watch and compare, but in the end we prefer our present and daily bread elsewhere.

With enough imagination, you can wander through the city centre for a whole day along the many squares, humble 😉 sacred houses and rich city palaces. Many other sights can be found in the created highlights.

Lucca, ‘a place to be and to see’ can be taken literally.
This can be your appointment with history.
                          Taste and enjoy...

A central square in the heart of Lucca. Its unusual elliptical shape is the result of a former amphitheater that stood here in Roman times. A beautiful square surrounded by beautiful old houses.

Lucca is a picturesque city on the Serchio River in Tuscany. Its landmark is the Renaissance city wall, which surrounds the historic city center with its idyllic alleys, squares, and restaurants. The Casa di Puccini, the birthplace of the great composer, is one of the highlights.

If you go to Lucca, you've probably read about the amphitheater square and should definitely visit it.
I imagined the square to be a bit more impressive. Since it's quite large, the curves of the building facades aren't as striking as the descriptions suggest. Still, it was nice to be there.
