There are already mentions of the castle from the year 945 under the name "Formicaria". In the 12th century it was given the name Firmian, until the castle was bought in 1473 by the sovereign prince of Tyrol, Duke Sigmund the Coined. He rebuilt the castle into a fortress and called it Sigmundskron Castle. When he came into financial difficulties and pledged the castle, the plant was greatly neglected. Over the years, the half ruin changed owners several times, was restored and used as a guest operation, before it acquired you in the province of South Tyrol in 1996.

Reinhold Messner received permission in 2003 to integrate his mountain museum in Sigmundskron Castle, which opened in 2006.

Various walks lead past Sigmundskron Castle, although a visit to the Messner Mountain Museum is a must.

It was only by coincidence that we passed by the Messner Mountain Museum Firmian on 2 August 2011, I really liked the exhibition and the restored castle / castle.

We were almost the only visitors there at that time, so we could really relax.

Furthermore, we wanted to see "Juval" at that time but unfortunately was no access at this time (the host was apparently home) - so we visited the "Dolomites" - very recommendable, jeep ride and the facility with his exhibition just brilliant.

Sigmundskron Castle is one of the castles in South Tyrol that Reinhold Messner bought and converted into museums. The entrance fee is € 12.00, but it is worth it.
