    The mausoleum of Count Carl von Alten is a dilapidated mausoleum in Wilkenburg in Lower Saxony, which has been listed since 1985 in the Lower Saxony list of monuments as a monument. The remains of the Mausoleum are located in a wooded area in a meadow landscape within the nature reserve Sundern. The area is a silted river loop of the glacial valley of the leash. Around the mausoleum, a ring ditch was dug during the construction, so that it stands on a small island. For the inflow of water provides a trench connection to Hemminger Maschgraben.

      After the death of the Hanoverian-British general and statesman Carl von Alten, the Mausoleum of Carl von Alten near Wilkenburg was built for him in 1842. Today it is located in the Sundern nature reserve. It was designed by the Royal Hanoverian court architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves and finished by the architect Conrad Wilhelm Hase. The mausoleum is today considered the first brick building of the Gothic Revival in Northern Germany.

              The history of the mausoleum is absolutely exciting to read, since General Graf von Alten was buried there until after the last war. Information boards on site explain the fate of this historic ruin and why the general's remains were transferred to a crypt in the Neustadt church. - In terms of architectural history, the mausoleum stands for the merits of two great Hanoverian builders: Conrad Wilhelm Hase and Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves. Although the ruin is very hidden in the Sundern nature reserve, clear signs have now been set up in Wilkenburg and Arnum so that this important monument can be easily reached both on foot and by bike.
