The Prinznhöhle is not of natural origin, but a medieval mine tunnel. It is accessible and 18m long. Right next door is the forester's lodge to the Prince's Cave where you can feast delicious.

An interesting place in the middle of the forest. Bring a good flashlight if you want to go in. Not for people who can't stand tight spaces. A small plaque describing the cave and the name would be nice.

Directly in front of the cave there is a grate. Since there is also a pure longitudinal grating in some cases, even larger dogs find it difficult to go directly to the den.

Historically interesting, one of the princes was hidden here during the prince robbery in Altenburg. The tunnel itself doesn't go very far into the mountain - it's definitely scary enough for children (don't forget your flashlight!).

                      The Princes Cave
                      - The Prince Robbery -
After the "Lindenauer Nahme" (attack on a merchant train near Leipzig), Kunz von Kaufungen was given notice of Stein Castle in 1450 as a feudal lord.
Because of this termination, Kunz was in a five-year dispute with the elector.
Since Kunz got no rights, he tried to enforce this by kidnapping Princes Ernst and Albrecht.
From July 7th to 8th, 1455, Kunz von Kaufungen and his helpers robbed the two princes from Altenburg Castle. He rode with Prince Albrecht in the direction of Grünhain and was captured there by charcoal burners.
The knights Mosen and Schönfeld reached the Hartenstein Forest with Prince Ernst
hid in an old mountain tunnel, today's Prinzenhöhle.
Passing traders reported about the capture of the Kunz von Kaufungen.
The knights then sent a message to Mr. Friedrich von Schönburg zu Hartenstein and asked for impunity when the prince was handed over, which they assured them
                      became.

The story about the kidnapping of princes is a real “journey” in itself.

The Hartenstein Prince's Cave, a roughly 18-meter-long crevice in the rock, is a medieval mountain tunnel in which the knights Wilhelm von Mosen and Wilhelm von Schönfels hid from July 8th to 11th, 1455.

The cave was rediscovered in 1778 by a Hartenstein deacon. Today it is a popular tourist destination.

The figure of the prince robber Konrad or Kunz von Kaufungen plays a very special role in Hartenstein's history. (Kaufungen near Waldenburg was his ancestral home.) From 1448 to 1450 he owned Stein Castle as a fief as "hereditary man". The Junker Kunz von Kaufungen was, together with Stein, lord over the serfs of Wildbach and Langenbach. He also owned the forests belonging to Stein and the Isenburg, which was already in ruins at the time.
When he was given notice to evict Stein Castle after the Lindenau attack (raid on a merchant convoy near Leipzig), because the Elector described it as a common robbery, Kunz bought the castle....

....and because of this termination, they were involved in a five-year legal dispute with the Elector, which ultimately became the cause of the prince's kidnapping.

The kidnapping took place on July 7th to 8th, 1455. Afterwards, the knights who had fled to the Bohemian border split into two groups in order to be sure of at least one prince. The knights Mosen von Schönfels and Prince Ernst were being pursued hard and had already lost 14 riders when they reached the Hartenstein Forest. They sought refuge in an old mountain tunnel, today's Prince's Cave. There, after three days, they received news of Kunz's capture near Grünhain, whereupon they handed Prince Ernst over to Count Friedrich von Schönburg at Hartenstein in return for a guarantee of immunity.
Kunz von Kaufungen was beheaded with a sword on the Freiberg market square on July 14th, 1455.
