In 1963 there was an incident at what was then the inner-German border near Altenburschla. After a friendly conversation between GDR border guards and an international group of young people who were visiting the border on Mainz heads, the two border guards were injured by mines. Since no help was available on the part of the GDR, three soldiers, two West Germans and one British, at the risk of their lives pulled the seriously injured across the border. After a stay in hospital in Eschwege, the soldiers were able to return to the GDR. The incident took place two years after the Wall was built and aroused great interest from the domestic and foreign press.
