The castle complex, which was probably founded in the 9th century, was in the 12th century after destruction and reconstruction owned by Count Egilmar I, first mentioned in 1091, an ancestor of the House of Oldenburg. Around 1130/40, Count Egilmar II gave his daughter in marriage to the nobleman Friedrich von Anvorde in Elmendorf, who, according to tradition, disappeared on a crusade. In 1134, Elmendorf Castle was first explicitly mentioned as the residence of Friedrich von Anforde.

The lords of Elmendorff later sat as ministerials at the castle, a Diederich von Elmendorpe is mentioned in 1287 as a witness in a document from the Rastede monastery. In 1331, the castle and the associated Meierhof passed into the possession of the Counts of Oldenburg in exchange for possessions on the Hase.

They are - as excavations by archaeologist Dr. Dieter Zoller prove - more than just simple elevations. In the middle of the twelfth century, a castle complex belonging to the Counts of Elmendorf stood here. Information boards present the history.
