The area of Lake Ossiach was one of the areas that King Karlmann gave to Ötting Monastery as a court meeting in 878. For a long time it was assumed that the donation related to the Ossiach monastery; it was therefore believed that the king was the founder of the monastery of Ossiach. Even when the misinterpretation of the document from 878 was later recognized, the founding of the monastery was held to be correspondingly early. Excavations also indicate that there was a church here before the Benedictines settled there.

At the end of the 10th century, the farm meeting came to the Bishop of Passau, later to Emperor Henry II. He transferred the farm to Count Ozi. Little is known about the origins of the monastery, since no documents have survived. It was founded shortly before 1028 by Ozi and his wife Glismod (also called Irenburg, depending on the source). The first monks are said to come from the Bavarian monastery Niederaltaich.

The ship also docks here. Very nice facility. You should definitely go through and then left to the cemetery. There is also a beautiful sundial.

The core of the former monastery church was Romanesque and was rebuilt in Gothic forms after a fire in 1484. The foundation of the monastery took place shortly before 1028. The current form of the church is characterized by a baroque change (1737-1744). The exterior is dominated by the crossing tower, the three apses and the local stone decorations. The baptistery is from the 14th century, the west facade was built in the 2nd quarter of the 18th century. Inside, the pillar basilica is vaulted with a lunette barrel and cross ridges, the chancel is elevated above the buried crypt.
