As here, the Way of the Cross usually leads up or along the mountain or hill (sometimes referred to as "Calverienberg" in memory of Golgotha, where Jesus Christ was crucified) with the - nowadays usually 14 - stations. Early medieval forerunners of the Stations of the Cross only had 7 stations and were sometimes referred to as the “Walk to the Seven Foot Falls”.
In some places, the XIVth station, the burial of Jesus, is followed by another station: the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This additional Station of the Cross expands the view from Good Friday to the Easter perspective of hope: overcoming death and suffering.
